CRADLE SUSPENDED FROM CEILING

A cradle suspended from the ceiling for infants.

DESCRIPTION

The cradle, called Mawok, is used for infants up to 6 months (or until they learn to roll over onto their stomach). The cradle is first suspended from a spring and then using a line to reach the ceiling. The line is attached on the ceiling in a track that can be guided in over the bed or be hanging freely over the floor.

TIPSTER’S COMMENTS

I am the baby’s mother and I have a spinal cord injury. When it was time for bed we pulled the cradle over the bed and when I sat up in bed the cradle was at the perfect height in front of me. All sleepy and tired, I just had to sit up in bed and reach for our little baby to nurse. In other words, our baby slept above us. During the day we pulled the cradle out over the floor next to the bed. Then it was also easy to pick up the baby because the height was just right for me. The spring suspension of the cradle helped our children to fall asleep quickly and comfortably in the cradle. We also brought the cradle with us when we spent the night away from home. It is easy to fold and pack in the bag that comes with it. There is also an accompanying hanging device to hang the cradle on doors. In my opinion the Mawok is the best product in the world!

CRIB

A crib called “bedside cribe” that can be placed next to adult beds.

DESCRIPTION

The crib can be adjusted to the proper height to fit an adult bed. By folding down one side the crib can be placed next to an adult bed. The crib can also stand separately in the room.

TIPSTER’S COMMENTS

It can be used as a completely separate space-saving crib for a newborn by folding down one long side of the bed and using it as an “extension” of the parent’s bed. Nice not to have to get up at night and have the baby close at hand when it’s time for feeding and diaper changing. For diaper changing, I’ve had a small basket with the essentials next to the bed and changed the baby on the bed on a disposable changing pad that can be thrown away if an accident should occur. Works great until the baby needs a bed with higher sides. It also has wheels so you can move it around with you.

ADAPTED CRIB

A standard crib on wheels with an opening on one long side.

DESCRIPTION

A crib from IKEA. The base of the bed can be mounted at different heights (IKEA original). On one side of the bed a number of the central slats were removed. The user made an opening where a strong piece of cloth was nailed onto the lower frame. The fabric is attached to the upper part of the frame with Velcro. This device makes it is easy to open and close the opening.  When the fabric is open, it is easy to place the baby in the crib or to pick up the baby from the crib. The user also mounted casters on the crib so it can easily be moved.

TIPSTER’S COMMENTS

The advantage of this bed is that it does not take up too much room. It is easy to move it from room to room. The disadvantage is that the user cannot access it from the front since there is no room for her knees underneath it. Another disadvantage is that she can’t pull the covers back over the baby or pat the baby when the fabric is in place. She is thinking about making a hole in the fabric for this purpose.

INSTRUCTIONS

Use a saw to remove the middle slats from the bed on one long side. Sew a piece of fabric that is slightly larger than the opening with a Velcro strip on the upper edge. Use a staple gun to secure it to the inside of the lower frame. Gua a corresponding Velcro strip to the outside of the upper frame. The fabric is on the inside of the bed frame, folds over the upper edge and is attached on the outside. Fabric strips can also be attached along the top edges to tie the fabric in place.
