SIMPLE BABY SLING

A baby sling that does not need to be tied, but consists of two tubes that are wrapped around the adult’s body.

DESCRIPTION

Two separate tubes that are made from a soft elastic fabric are wrapped around the body to form an X. The baby is placed against the adult’s body like in an ordinary baby sling.

TIPSTER’S COMMENTS

I thought it was much easier to put on the baby sling than to wrap a bunch of fabric around my body. The disadvantage is that you have to buy the sling in the right size so it only fit me and not my husband.

LONG ELASTIC SLING

An ordinary elastic sling works well for a person sitting in a wheelchair.

DESCRIPTION

A five-meter long jersey shawl is tied around the parent. The baby is placed inside the shawl and pressed firmly against the parent’s chest. The solution leaves the user’s arms free and able to move together with the child. The sling works for newborns until the baby no longer fits on the parent’s lap, facing the parent. The length of the sling can be adjusted and as the baby grows, the sling can be loosened to allow the baby’s weight to rest on the parent’s lap.

TIPSTER’S COMMENTS:

The sling works like an extra pair of arms. I tie the shawl on in the morning and then leave it on during the day. By using the shawl I can move around without being afraid of dropping the baby. Since the baby is pressed against my body, it doesn’t get heavy even though I have reduced trunk function. When we go out the baby lies inside the shawl under my jacket, with a cap on her head as the only outer garment. Nothing else is needed to keep her warm even in winter. People usually say that an elastic sling only works when the baby is small and that you have to switch to a fixed sling, but I used it until my daughter was 1.5 years old and didn’t fit facing me in my arms anymore.

BABY CARRIER WITH CUSHION

Having the baby in a carrier makes it easier for parents who use wheelchairs.

DESCRIPTION

Baby carrier with adjustable belt and shoulder straps. The user places a pillow under the child because the carrier’s shoulder straps are not long enough for the child to be able to sit on his lap.

TIPSTER’S COMMENTS:

Using the pillow lifts the weight off the user’s shoulders, and both he and the child can sit comfortably.

From about 1 year of age the user’s three children have been able to sit freely on his lap without a harness, see related tip.

When the children were really small, they could be suspended in the baby carrier facing the user. This solution worked until they were about 8 months old and too large for their legs to fit. Once the children are old enough to sit by themselves, usually nothing is needed when the children ride along.

ERGOBABY BABY CARRIER

Baby carrier with optional infant insert; adapts from newborns to toddlers weighing 20kg.

DESCRIPTION

The Ergobaby baby carrier evenly distributes the weight between shoulders and hips. The Ergobaby rain and wind cover was purchased as an accessory.

TIPSTER’S COMMENTS:

I found the carrier to be very soft and ergonomic with good support for the baby. It was nice to have the baby close to my body in winter, but it was a little too hot in the summer. The carrier worked great until the child was too tall and his feet began to dangle close to the wheelchair wheels.
