HELPING CHILDREN UP INTO THE SWING

An upside down bucket is used as a stepping stool to make it easier to get into the swing.

DESCRIPTION

An ordinary children’s bucket is turned upside down and can be used as a stool for the child to stand on when climbing up onto the swing – independently!

TIPSTER’S COMMENTS

My child and I used this method from age 2 years. It was really nice not to have to lift the child in and out of the swing.

HELPING CHILDREN TO SWING

A rope with a loop is threaded through the swing before the child climbs up on it.

DESCRIPTION

The rope allows a parent to get the swing moving from a greater distance away from the swing. The parent uses the long rope to pull the swing instead of pushing it. I didn’t have to move out of the way of the swing and could remain in the same place regardless of the speed of the swing.

TIPSTER’S COMMENTS

The rope was rather thin (from a sailboat) and had a loop at one end.

PRODUCT

An ordinary thin rope.

REACHING AID

A reaching aid can be invaluable during the last months of pregnancy and for a parent with a baby in a sling or baby carrier on her/his stomach.

DESCRIPTION

During the last months of pregnancy when it can be difficult for a person in a wheelchair to bend forward a reaching aid can be a very useful tool for reaching things on the floor. It is also useful for parents who have a baby in a sling or carrier.

TIPSTER’S COMMENTS

When I was first injured and my occupational therapist gave me a reaching aid, I had no idea of what to do with it. As my pregnancy advanced, I remembered my old reaching aid which was hidden in the depths of the closet and since then it has not left my side. I also used it a lot when the baby was small and I carried her in a sling.

PLAYGROUND ON THE COUCH

A baby gym is placed on the couch instead of on the floor so a parent who cannot move from a wheelchair to the floor can get close to the baby while he or she is playing.

DESCRIPTION

For newborns up to the age when the baby starts to move around. To avoid lifting from the floor and to be able to sit near the baby during playtime the parent places the baby gym on the couch. Full attention is a crucial because you never know when a baby is going to roll over for the first time. The outer edge can also be lined with pillows to prevent the baby from falling if he or she should roll over. Of course the baby gym could be placed on a bed for the same reason.

An ordinary baby gym is placed on a couch or a bed.

WALL-MOUNTED BABY CHANGING TABLE

Wall-mounted hinged baby changing table suitable for wheelchair users.

DESCRIPTION

The hinged baby changing table is attached to the bathroom wall.

TIPSTER’S COMMENTS

The baby changing table is mounted at the right height for a walking person, but it also works well for the user, since he comes under it with his knees and is therefore close enough.
